HIV-positive man who intentionally infected ‘thousands’ of partners turns himself in

Posted on 31 December 2011 by Vince Monde

Hundreds of Michigan residents — and others — may have been infected with HIV by a man who told police he’d been on a three-year mission to transmit the disease to as many people as he could, MSNBC reports.

Police arrested David Dean Smith, 51, last week after he turned himself in — and admitted he had unprotected sex with "thousands" of partners with the intention of killing them by infecting them with the virus.

only two possible victims have yet been identified.

Smith’s mission to sicken his lovers likely stretched to other states including anyone he may have seduced via Yahoo! Personals, as he did with the one of two victims who came forward.

"He’s charming," the alleged victim, who didn’t want to be identified, told 24 Hour News 8. "He’s very charming."

Records from Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, where Smith had been admitted recently because he was "suicidal," indicated he is "sexually aroused by causing pain to females," according to court documents.

the woman, who was diagnosed with HIV in October 2008, said Smith told her there were 3,000 victims including men and women.

"he hits drifters," said the alleged victim. "he hits people who are young. he hits young women, and from what I understand, he hits men too. those are his targets."

Health officials released an alert to residents of Kent County Michigan that "possibly hundreds have been exposed to HIV," and encouraged possible victims to come forward and be tested.

Kent County Health Department spokesperson Lisa LaPlante said this is the first time they have seen someone deliberately trying to spread HIV to so many people.

"We want to make sure that anyone who may have injected drugs with , who may have had sex with him, does come forward and get tested," LaPlante said. "We want to make sure that they’re not spreading the virus to anyone else."

Before his arrest, Smith texted the alleged victim: "Turning myself into the law, my life is over. take care. always love you."

Smith, currently at Kent County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, has been charged with two felony counts of failure to disclose HIV status to a sexual partner, a charge carrying a four-year jail sentence and a $5,000 fine.

Smith’s attorney, Richard E. Zambon, said he is "exploring all options" in his client’s defense, and specified "I am concerned about his mental health."

And so “I repent” from salt consumption.

And so “I repent” from salt consumption.

Salt (sodium) plays an important role in the regulation of muscle contraction, fluid balance and nerve impulses in the human body and it is essential for overall good health. All our body fluids including blood, sweat, tears, etc contain sodium. It is essential to maintain proper balance of sodium in these fluids. Sodium in the body is mainly found in fluids that surround the body’s cells, such as blood and lymph fluid. When sodium intake exceeds the amount the body can handle it builds up in the interstitial areas and the kidneys have to work extra hard to excrete it.

A build up may cause the body to hold extra fluids in the blood and around the cells, which contributes to increased blood pressure and also excess weight gain from water. The reason why water retention can be so hard to diagnose is that almost all the body’s tissues have plenty of capacity to hold a little extra fluid without looking abnormal. This extra fluid is what makes one look fat.

Generally, we should only eat between 1,000 and 3,000 mg of sodium a day, so it’s easy to go overboard. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for sodium is about 2,300 mg – slightly more than one teaspoon. While sodium occurs naturally in many foods and is used in food additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), salt itself still accounts for more than 90 per cent of the sodium in our diets.

Tips to Reduce Sodium in Your Diet
In fact, three-quarters of the salt in our diets comes from processed foods, with just 10 per cent coming from the salt we add during cooking or at the table, and the remaining 15 per cent that occurs naturally in food. This means they key to keeping salt intake down is to eat fewer processed, salty foods such as sauces, pickles, crisps, canned meats, sausages, ham, and canned soups. The good news is many of these foods are also high in calories and fat making them poor choices if you’re trying to lose weight. The more highly processed a food is, the more likely it is to have high sodium content. That’s why, when it comes to eating, it’s wise to stick mainly to the basics. Fruits, vegetables, lean meant, beans and whole grains all have little sodium.

Eat canned soups or broths sparingly. These can be very high in sodium. Use fresh poultry, fish, and lean meat, rather than canned or processed types. Switch to low-sodium margarine, or low-salt butter. Avoid salted nuts, chips, pickles and other snack foods. Avoid using table salt. Do not add extra salt at the table. Reduce sodium when shopping. Read the food labels carefully to find out more about what is in the foods you eat. This will help you choose the right foods. This will help you limit the amount of sodium you eat everyday. Rinse salt from canned foods.

How to maintain a great posture as you age

How to maintain a great posture as you age

Posted on 16 December 2011 by Healthmaster

Although a stooped posture may seem to go hand in hand with old age, you can help prevent the characteristic rounding of the spine that is often caused by osteoporosis and the destruction of the vertebrae in the upper and middle spine.

1. Stretching

Now that many of us spend our days hunched in front of a computer, “it’s very important for us to be able to stretch and open up and improve our range of motion,” To stay limber, try to get up for a couple minutes every half hour and stretch, walk, or stand.

2. Easy exercises

Try this exercise: Every morning and night, lie down on the floor and make slow “snow angels” with your arms for two or three minutes.

For an extra challenge, roll up a towel and put it on the floor underneath your spine. Many gyms have half foam rollers—a tube cut in half lengthwise—that you can use for even more of a stretch.
But do these stretches slowly and stop if you feel anything worse than mild discomfort.

3. Sit straight

When you do have to work at a desk, “sitting up with good, tall posture and your shoulders dropped is a good habit to get into,” This can take some getting used to; exercise disciplines that focus on body awareness, such as Pilates and yoga, can help you to stay sitting straight (visit our yoga section).

4. Strengthen your core

Pilates and yoga are great ways to build up the strength of your “core”—the muscles of your abdomen and pelvic area.

These muscles form the foundation of good posture, and a strong core can have many other benefits, from improving your athletic performance to preventing urinary incontinence.

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and may help us maintain our muscles too.

Try to get it from a healthy diet. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine, an independent, found that most of us get enough vitamin D from food and sunlight without taking supplements.

The recommended dietary intake for vitamin D is 600 IU a day for women up to age 70 and 800 IU for women older than 70.

Walking or running, which burns more calories?

Posted on 13 December 2011 by Healthmaster

I have read and heard from other people that running and walking a mile burns the same number of calories. I have compared the two on a treadmill and the difference is astounding!

Distance itself does not really determine total calories burned. How long you exercise, how fast/hard you exercise, how much you weigh, and your fitness level are the major determinants of calories burned.

According to experiments, a 200 pound man would burn 113 calories walking 1 mile at a pace of 4 miles per hour (total exercise duration = 15 minutes).

The same man would burn 151 calories running a mile at a pace of 6 miles per hour (total exercise duration = 10 minutes).

And if you were strolling for a mile at a pace of 2 miles per hour, you would burn 113 calories but it would take you twice as long (total exercise duration = 30 minutes).

This may be where the confusion takes place. You burn fewer calories exercising at a lower intensity, but if you exercise for a longer

period of time, in some cases, as with walking at 2 miles per hour versus 4 miles per hour, you may burn the same total number of calories.

Exercising at a higher intensity burns more calories per minute, which is much more relevant than distance. In addition, if you weigh more, you burn more calories doing the same activity (this is just something to keep in mind. I’m not suggesting that you gain weight to increase the number of calories that you burn!).

Also, if you are more fit, you actually burn fewer calories doing the same activity, but the good news is that you burn more calories from fat when you are fit.
This is why the physical activity recommendations for adults are either 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) per week or 75 minutes of vigorous (running or jogging) physical activity per week in addition to strength training. The bottom line is that more intense exercise, like running, is a more time efficient workout. However, many people, including myself, are not able to run because of injury or arthritis. In this case, exercise as intensely as you can, but realize that you will have to exercise for a longer period of time to burn the same number of calories.

“Make sure to get this recommended amount” says Healthmaster!

Beauty or the Beast? Skin tells the story

Posted on 10 December 2011 by Healthmaster

Your skin can reveal the stories of your life, from the fabled glow of pregnancy to the less-welcome spots that surface from sun damage. You hear a lot about how to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, but there are many other simple health moves that can keep your exterior in fabulous shape, decade after decade.

Hormone-related skin problems aren’t just for teens. Surging progesterone and testosterone levels before your period can cause adult acne to erupt around the mouth, chin, and nose. And hormonal stress can exacerbate eczema—dry, irritated skin, often on the face and hands.

To treat adult acne, which tends to flare up in the 30s and is more inflammatory than teen blackheads and whiteheads, derms often prescribe benzoyl peroxide and retinol or Retin-A, says Gary Goldenberg, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, in New York City. Soothe eczema by using gentle, fragrance-free cleansers; if the problem persists, you may need a prescription for a topical corticosteroid.

In middle age, damage done to your skin decades earlier starts to show up. This can include the first signs of skin cancer.

The good news: when caught early, it’s 99 percent treatable. So monthly self-checks for moles or anything suspect are smart. “In front of a mirror, examine your entire body, from your scalp (use a handheld mirror) to the soles of your feet. Then, consider a prescription for a retinoid like tretinoin to minimize signs of aging such as uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and age spots.

If you’re plagued by redness, spider-like blood vessels, and small bumps on your face, your derm may diagnose rosacea, a common skin condition often triggered by sun exposure, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, and hot weather.

Eating Healthy ? Tips To Eat Healthy Foods

Posted on 15 November 2011 by Vince Monde

A diet expert from France once said that he have studied over 600 diets but he found that the most healthy and easy one from these is the diet mentioned by Muhammed the prophet of Islam as he said something in the meaning of “We – Muslims – don’t eat till we become hungry and when we eat we don’t fill our stomach” the same man, Muhammed, said something else in the meaning of “The worst vessel that was filled is the stomach” So it is known centuries ago that eating healthy is useful for the body, soul and mind.

The human is a very complicated creature, how many of those who want to discover the best healthy weight loss diet already know that the problem is that they burn calories less than what they should be burning I relation to what they consume? I think that there are many people who know that but how many of them who already apply this to his/her lifestyle.

This complication in our nature also makes the problem of unhealthy eating depend on different factors in different people, but the most obvious is the stress in life and the very busy work schedule that many people have these two can make it very hard to eat a healthy diet or even have time to think about it.

So how you can eat healthy:

They say that breakfast is most important meal during the day.

You should start your day with a healthy meal. Start your day by eating low fat milk, eggs, cereal and fruits or fruit juice.

When it comes to lunch you should keep in your mind that you can consume the whole amount of calories you need in one meal. You can eat salad with chicken at home or outside. Just pay attention to what you put in your mouth.

Dinner is very important too and many people take it in the wrong way. Eating dinner just before sleeping is a very bad unhealthy habit that many people. You should eat your dinner at least three hours before sleeping or you help gaining weight and heart burn and other health problems.

Water is very important with all the meals you have. Eating enough amount of water every day has a great benefit to the body like detoxifying the blood and helping in metabolism reactions. Drinking about 2 liters of water daily should be enough to make your body well hydrated.

There two different types of people, those who know and don’t take action and those who take action once they learn something and those are the successful people. Which type are you?

Health Insurance.

Posted on 11 September 2011 by Vince Monde

Health insurance is just like other insurance forms. It is an insurance form of collectivism, which allows people to bring the risks, in this case the risk associated with costs of illness. This collective form is usually owned publicly or otherwise organized non-profit people of the pool, although in a few countries, health insurance policies can also manage non-profit organizations. It is sometimes used in the broadest sense of insurance covering disability or long-term care or custodial care needs. It can provide a program sponsored by the government social security or private insurance companies. It can be purchased as a group (for example, a study to cover the employees), or buy individual.

In any case, groups or individuals to cover the tax payment or tax, help protect against unexpected costs of health care. Alike benefits paying for some medical allowances may also be through social programs funded by the general government.

In assessing the risk of health and care costs, a usual financial structure may be developed to ensure that funds are available to pay for health services, as defined in the insurance contract. Benefit administered by the central, such as government agencies, private companies or non-profit organization.

Health insurance policy is an insurance contract and the person or his sponsor (e.g. an employer). The health contract may be again renewed yearly or monthly. The type and amount of health spending, which will be covered by health insurance company is informed in advance of the States, or Evidence cover booklet. Obligations of the insured person may take various forms.

Accident insurance is given by the employer and generally covering all risks to get to work and the workplace. Long Term Care covered half and half by the employer and the employee and includes cases where a person is incapable of managing their daily activities (feeding, cleaning the apartment, personal hygiene, etc.). It is about 2% of wage income or pension, with employers paying employer contributions: There are two distinct systems of health care National Health Service and private insurance. Both systems are struggling with rising medical costs and demographic change. Approximately 87.5% of people with health insurance are members of the public system, while 12.5% are covered by private insurance (since 2006).

Generally, the health care plans of such companies entail cashless hospitalization. According to the facility, the insured patient, during the time of medical emergence is covered for medical costs for his/her hospitalization of more than 24 hours at any one of the listed network hospitals of the healthcare service provider.  In other words, if the insured patient is hospitalized for more than 24 hours at any hospital that is listed in the network hospitals of insurance company, the major portions of costs of medication are born by the company rather than the patient insured.
