Walking or running, which burns more calories?

Posted on 13 December 2011 by Healthmaster

I have read and heard from other people that running and walking a mile burns the same number of calories. I have compared the two on a treadmill and the difference is astounding!

Distance itself does not really determine total calories burned. How long you exercise, how fast/hard you exercise, how much you weigh, and your fitness level are the major determinants of calories burned.

According to experiments, a 200 pound man would burn 113 calories walking 1 mile at a pace of 4 miles per hour (total exercise duration = 15 minutes).

The same man would burn 151 calories running a mile at a pace of 6 miles per hour (total exercise duration = 10 minutes).

And if you were strolling for a mile at a pace of 2 miles per hour, you would burn 113 calories but it would take you twice as long (total exercise duration = 30 minutes).

This may be where the confusion takes place. You burn fewer calories exercising at a lower intensity, but if you exercise for a longer

period of time, in some cases, as with walking at 2 miles per hour versus 4 miles per hour, you may burn the same total number of calories.

Exercising at a higher intensity burns more calories per minute, which is much more relevant than distance. In addition, if you weigh more, you burn more calories doing the same activity (this is just something to keep in mind. I’m not suggesting that you gain weight to increase the number of calories that you burn!).

Also, if you are more fit, you actually burn fewer calories doing the same activity, but the good news is that you burn more calories from fat when you are fit.
This is why the physical activity recommendations for adults are either 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) per week or 75 minutes of vigorous (running or jogging) physical activity per week in addition to strength training. The bottom line is that more intense exercise, like running, is a more time efficient workout. However, many people, including myself, are not able to run because of injury or arthritis. In this case, exercise as intensely as you can, but realize that you will have to exercise for a longer period of time to burn the same number of calories.

“Make sure to get this recommended amount” says Healthmaster!

Fitness Camp

Posted on 18 November 2011 by Vince Monde

If you were a lucky kid and had a happy childhood, you may have attended summer camp and now have many fond memories of those moments during the summers of your youth. For adults there is a new kind of camp called a Fitness Camp and these are the places to go to in order to regain part of what has potentially been lost as you got older, i.e. good physical fitness. Good physical fitness is important especially if you are overweight. Being overweight puts more stress on the body and obesity causes all kinds of problems because it contributes to the causes of many other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and high or low blood pressure. It is very possible that a person may die much younger than they should have simply due to the fact that they are seriously overweight and do not maintain good physical fitness.

If you are the kind of a person that wakes up at sunrise, does 100 pushups and military style jumping jacks, does a round of Pilates and yoga before breakfast, and heads off to the gym after lunch, you may not need to attend a Fitness Camp (or you may want to become a personal trainer at one). But if you are like most adults, especially those that have suffered under the various life stresses of modern day living you may find that the last time you exercised on a regular basis was when you were in high school. Even though gym attendance is substantial, the majority of people over the age of 30 do not get enough exercise. As you get nearer to middle age, this trend is even worse and many people gain an extra 50 to over 100 lbs. of unwanted weight. Few of those people can pick up a 100 lb. bag of cement and carry it up three flights of stairs, yet they are carrying the same kind of burden around with them everyday every where they go.

After trying and failing at many diet attempts a lot of people give up. But there is no reason to give up if there is still a strong possibility of regaining your own health and perhaps saving your own life. That is why a Fitness Camp provides the alternative for those individuals that have a need for an intensive program and can benefit from a guided method of dieting and physical exercise in a modern and beautiful setting.

Healthy Eating

Posted on 12 November 2011 by Vince Monde

In our life, we somtimes do not care much about the effects of food to our hralth. Though we understand that there are some certain types of foods which are not good for health such as heavy eating habit, we don’t pay attention to the illnessses that we ca get. For instance, comsuming too much fat foods can result in ebesity, or saturated fatscan cause arteriosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. Foods that can contribute to the growth of diabetes are white bread, pasta and rice.

Let’s look at six aspects of your diet that can affect your health in a positive or negative way:

Antioxidants
Organic vs. non-organic foods
Good and bad fats
Glycemic level
Your digestive system
Cooking techniques

1. Antioxidants

Many substances in our food attack and damage our DNA, which can cause faster aging (because the cells can’t regenerate correctly) or even cancer.

Antioxidant-rich foods (e.g. berries, red beans, artichokes) can help to protect your cells and prevent these processes. Some foods even help your body to create its own antioxidants.

2. Organic vs. non-organic foods

Fruit and vegetables that were grown organic taste better and contain more nutrients because they were given their time to grow. Vitamins are essential to keep our body functioning and to keep our immune system strong. This will not only keep us healthier but also slow down our body’s aging process. In addition, organic foods are free from health-harming chemicals and contaminants.

3. Good and bad fats

Fat is not our enemy. Yes, too much fat causes problems like overweight. But our body needs fat. There are good fats that heal, and bad fats that make us ill. Saturated fat (mainly in animal products) increases the bad cholesterol level. Vegetable fats, on the contrary, are mainly unsaturated which is much healthier. Olive oil even lowers the bad and raises the good cholesterol level, preventing coronary disease.

4. Glycemic level

A high or strongly fluctuating blood sugar level is unhealthy. Refined foods like white bread or rice, and especially sugar, quickly push the blood sugar up but are absorbed rather fast. Eating large amounts of these simple-carbohydrate-foods increases your risk of diabetes. Grains and whole grain products, on the other hand, which are rich in complex carbohydrates keep your blood sugar fairly constant.

5. Your digestive system

It’s crucial to keep your digestive system performing at its best. If it doesn’t, you feel uncomfortable, detoxification works insufficiently, and nutrient absorption is disturbed. This can lead to a lack of vitamins and minerals which will cause a weak immune system. Eating many high fiber foods, like fruits, vegetables and whole grain products, can help to keep your digestive system balanced.

6. Cooking techniques

The health benefits of food lie not only in what you eat, but also in how you prepare it. Overheating oil in your pan, for example, can produce health-harming substances. Frying chips in oil will add lots of unhealthy fat to the healthy potatoes; it would be much healthier to oven-bake them with a bit of olive oil or without fat. Cooking vegetables in water, especially when overcooking, makes them lose many nutrients, whilst steaming retains most of them.

This should give you an idea of the importance of our food for our health. If you eat the right amount of the right things, prepared correctly, you can prevent many illnesses, feel energetic and grow old in health. If you eat the wrong things or too much of them, or prepare foods in an unhealthy way, this will have a negative impact on your health.

The good thing is that you don’t fall ill because you eat unhealthy once. Trouble starts when your body is exposed to health-harming substances over a long period. It’s never too late to change your diet. If you are not ill yet, you might be able to prevent illness. If you have fallen ill already, still change your diet! For if you start eating healthy, you can achieve improvements of your symptoms, giving more quality of life, or slow down the progress of your disease.

Fit Over Fat, Fitness

Posted on 12 November 2011 by Vince Monde

A few kids have actually died from the flu this year here in Colorado one of them 15 years old! Being healthy is one thing I know I often take for granted until I get sick, that is. I’ve found that it’s easier to stay healthy than it is to get healthy again once you’re sick, too. With that in mind (and the season just getting underway), here are some quick tips for staying healthy this wrestling season:

Eat well. This means eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, the best way to get all the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.
Avoid sugar! Sugar depresses your immune system. Soda pop is probably the #1 culprit for most people, so do yourself a favor and have a water or fresh juice instead. (Dads and coaches, alcohol also depresses your immune system.)
Supplement with vitamins/minerals. Vitamin C and zinc, in particular, have been shown to strengthen the immune system.
Get enough sleep.

Our immune system is very dependent on this, and we’re especially vulnerable to sickness when we neglect our proper rest (around 8 hours per night for most people).
Stay well hydrated. Our bodies need plenty of water to function properly, especially when it’s doing extra things like working out and fighting off all the “bugs” that typically go around. Hot drinks and soups are also good here, and help us
Stay warm. When we get cold, we force our bodies to work to stay warm. This takes energy away from the immune system and makes us more vulnerable to sickness.
Exercise (this one’s easy during the season!). Regular exercise keeps your metabolism high and your body (including your immune system) functioning at a high level like a well-oiled machine.
Stay clean. Shower right after practice, and wash your hands with soap and hot water frequently. Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact.
Avoid close contact with people who have a cold or flu.
Keep your hands out of your eyes, nose, and mouth. Your hands are probably the one part of your body where you’re most likely to pick up virus-spreading germs. No need to help out the “bad guys” by putting them directly inside you!
Keep a positive attitude and a joyful outlook. More on that below!

Aerobic Exercises

Posted on 10 November 2011 by Vince Monde

Aerobic exercise is a long duration, lower intensity activity which increases your oxygen consumption, makes your heart and lungs work harder, and results in increased endurance. Swimming, brisk walking, running are common Aerobic exercises.

Aerobic exercise is one of the key ingredients to a healthy body. It is also a great way to relieve stress and anxiety. It is best if you’re trying to lull yourself to sleep at night. It is one of the best high impact cardiovascular exercises that you can do for your body.

Aerobic exercise is the only form of exercise that burns fat, thus helping to lose fat weight. It is better for blood pressure than resistance exercise. These exercises are usually of moderate intensity, about 60-80% of maximum exertion, for the duration of at least 15 or 20 minutes and burns primarily fat (fatty acids) for fuel.

It is perhaps the answer to turn the body into a lean and mean machine, brimming with energy and strength. It  is a type of exercise in which muscles draw on oxygen in the blood as well as fats and glucose that increase cardiovascular endurance.

Remember, if your aim is to get a six pack, a healthy eating regime, along with aerobic exercise is also required. The simplest and most common form of water aerobic exercise is swimming.

The main benefit is that Water aerobic exercise is a safer and healthier aerobic exercise simply because this aqua exercise does not strain the bone, joint and body muscle. Water aerobic exercise is also known as aqua aerobic exercise. For those who hate the feeling of sticky perspiring body, water aerobic exercise is a good alternative.

Recommended intensity of aerobic exercises is within 60 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate. The number of calories you’ll burn during aerobic exercise is affected by your body weight, the intensity of your workout, your conditioning level, and metabolism, so burn rates are only an estimate. (Maximum heart rate is equal to 220 minus your age).

While aerobic exercise is the best way to improve cardiovascular fitness, weightlifting is the best way to strengthen muscles and bones and build muscle mass. Regular exercise is a key to maintaining a nontoxic body in our toxic environment.

Aerobic exercises and Muscles

Aerobic literally means “with oxygen”, and refers to the use of oxygen in muscles’ energy-generating process. Muscle soreness and discomfort are normal symptoms of strength training, and may be delayed as long as 48 hours after training. Muscle cells have many mitochondria, which allow them to respond quickly to the need for doing work. Muscle burns more calories at rest than other bodily tissues, though just how much is debatable.

Practice of aerobic exercises will help you develop stronger leg and hip muscles and it will do wonders for your cardio-respiratory fitness level as well. Start with the largest muscles and work your way up to the smallest. Your largest muscle is your hips and your smallest muscles are your arms.

Some important facts about fat: Fat will not turn into muscle, nor muscle into fat.

Any activity involving the major muscle groups can be aerobic, such as swimming, running, or brisk walking. ”But the biggest change in metabolism (in women at midlife and later) comes from loss of muscle mass. Women and men lose muscle as they age, which is why it is recommended that everyone strength train two to three days a week to keep the muscles strong.

Oxygen

Oxygen, fats, and glucose are used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the basic fuel for all cells. Oxygen aids the functioning of every body system. Aerobic literally means “with oxygen”, and refers to the use of oxygen in muscles’ energy-generating process. In such exercise, oxygen is used to “burn” fats and glucose in order to produce adenosine triphosphate, the basic energy carrier for all cells. Good circulation is a boon to every inch, providing oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

Aerobic exercise can be defined as the one, which involves the use of oxygen to produce energy, whereas anaerobic exercise makes the body to produce energy without using oxygen. While oxygen is used to break down glucose by aerobic exercise, the anaerobic exercises make use of phosphocreatine, stored in the muscles, for the process.

Aerobic exercises improve the circulation of blood and transportation of oxygen in the body reduces blood pressure and burns fat. It is a type of exercise in which muscles draw on oxygen in the blood as well as fats and glucose that increase cardiovascular endurance.

Eat healthy live healthy

Most of the food material gets contaminated if they are exposed to atmosphere for a greater period of time. For this purpose food packaging is the most important thing. It requires protection, tampering resistance, and special physical, chemical, or biological needs. It also shows the product that is labeled to show any nutrition information on the food being consumed. Food packaging includes aluminum food packaging, plastic food packaging, polystyrene food packaging, paper food packaging etc.

Packaging Supply offers glass bottles and plastic containers for individual purposes. Food packaging offers physical protection, barrier protection, agglomeration, security, convenience etc. Market leaders in food packaging for the fresh and chilled food sectors and the fastest growing packaging suppliers to the sector are across UK and Europe.

Below highlights the most popular whole sale food packaging supply, packaging materials and general industry supplies common to the Food process market segment. Reduced packaging and sustainable packaging are becoming more frequent. Plastic packaging being used is usually non-biodegradable due to possible interactions with the food. Also, biodegradable polymers often require special composting conditions to properly degrade. Normal sealed landfill conditions do not promote biodegradation.Biodegradable plastics include biodegradable films and coatings synthesized from organic materials and microbial polymers. Food packaging involves much of care to b taken, so as the food don’t get decomposed after several days. Many ingredients are added into the food as a “preservative “to protect the food from being attacked by fungi or termites. Packaging supply provides us with the material to preserve food, either it is plastic bag or a paper bag .it is advisable to use paper bags rather than plastic bags from food packaging. From a school going kid to a business man each and everybody in today’s life need our food to b covered and healthy.

For this immense care has to b taken even for the packaging supplies. If the plastic bags are of not good material it may cause harm to our food. Even the vendors and the shopkeepers should know the importance of food packaging. Packaging supplies though has equivalent importance they should b easily available and cheap and easy to transport. Food packaging is an integral and essential component of food science and technology curricula. Thus a major attention should b drawn by the government to make the packaging supplies of better quality. Strong packaging can be strong food safety and protect against bacterial.

Fit Over Fat: Fitness

Posted on 07 November 2011 by Vince Monde

I can vouch for that as I spend at least 40 minutes prior to going for a run, telling myself I MUST do it, I CAN do it, it WON’T hurt honest. Once I have sufficiently convinced myself to open the door and lever myself out in to the great outdoors and the weather, I have to further remind myself within the first five minutes of running that the hurting will stop soon. I have been running nearly all my life and still, the first five minutes of running always, always hurts.

But then eventually it stops hurting and I see the world around me, the open vistas across fields, the wildlife (other runners, cyclists, dog walkers and the most dangerous wildlife of all, people in their cars!)the feel of the ‘weather’ on my skin, usually it is raining, but once in a blue sky we have sunshine, the sheer joy of being able to run and keep running mile after mile.

When I started running, I could barely do a 50 yards without collapsing, calling for emergency first aid and resuscitation (always of the mouth to mouth variety darling).

Running, if you stick with it, quickly rewards you with the amount of progress you can make in a short period of time. When you run your first mile you feel like taking out a full page ad in the local paper, announcing to the world, the birth of a super athlete! (Whatever you do, don’t do that, people will point and laugh the next time they see you in town). After your first 3k, 5k and half marathon, you will marvel at yourself, your abilities and feel you can actually run. However if you start fretting over times, heart rates, speed, minute miles etc etc, you may never be content with your achievements. I find all that time keeping malarkey incredibly boring, but some people need to constantly challenge themselves and prove stuff. I on the other hand just want to run, stay fit, live long.

And you will get fit, you’ll find you have a bounce in your step, loose pounds of your body fat, develop long lean legs and discover you have a lovely pert bottom. Life always compensates pain (somehow).

Health Retreats

Posted on 07 November 2011 by Vince Monde

With a variety of luxurious health retreats, there is no reason to postpone the body detoxification and skin maintenance any longer. Health retreats offer programs designed to cultivate a new and healthy lifestyle in a variety of different ways. For this reason, the health retreat destination can be chosen by the various activities and therapies offered. These locations rejuvenate the body and renew the spirit. A session in a treatment centre involves total privacy; relaxation in nature, various natural therapies, a varied-food menu, massage, sauna, meditation, counseling, naturopathy and other treatments depending on the destination. Any emotional imbalance, stress, addictions and negative habits, destructive for anybody’s life, are removed during a retreat journey. A retreat journey provide sufficient resources to continue applying the exercises after returning home and maintain this way the wellness of body and mind.

There are many health retreat centers, but the most popular and recommended are Canyon Ranch Miami Florida, Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort, Bordeaux, Les Sources de Caudalie, Pujjis Wellness Retreat, Aydin and Natur-Med Thermal Springs.

Canyon Ranch, Miami Beach provides spectacular ocean views and wellness spa.

The rejuvenating activities vary from facials massages to thermal water therapies and spa cabins. Wellness services involve stress management, weight loss and nutrition.

Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort provides rejuvenating activities such as yoga, Pilates and spa. The location offers refreshing walks through the eucalyptus forests, personal yoga sessions under the supervision of experienced trainers, where only four guests are allowed during the session.

The location also offers the opportunity to enjoy long walks on the hills and hearing the sound of the river for additive relaxation.

There are also many spas around the world such as Arizona, Michigan, Belize, Brazil, Mexico, Monaco, and Luxembourg, which provide wellness services.

Arizona is the spa lover’s dream came true.

The superb destination provides resort spa and massages which nurture the intellect and the body.

Wine spas offer wine treatments, which hydrate and, stretch the skin, slowing down the aging due to the wine rich content in antioxidant. The first wine spa was Boudreaux, Les Sources de Caudalie.

There are also spa destinations that offer couples massages in a romantic ambience creating incredible memories.

Detox spas are the adequate way to start the wellness program. These spas recommend a limited use of alcohol, fat foods, caffeine, cigarettes, salt, and sugar. The detoxification treatments also involve meditation and yoga, cooking classes and lessons about nutrition to maintain the well being of the body.

Everyone needs a time dedicated exclusively to relaxation, away from the stress, traffic congestion and city noise. This requires spending money but there are also some alternative methods such as spa gifts or using tools and unique massage lotions at home, which can be easily found online and ordered from home.

Nowadays, life is extremely stressful, but with treatment, help and will the wellness could be prolonged or maintained at the same level, not to mention the fact that less stress, scientifically means a longer life. Even more than this, the less stressed a person is, the slower the body ages.

My wife and I recently visited this health retreat in Victoria. They have a day spa, massage and are also offer bed and breakfast accommodation in Olinda
