Hundreds of Michigan residents — and others — may have been infected with HIV by a man who told police he’d been on a three-year mission to transmit the disease to as many people as he could, MSNBC reports.
Police arrested David Dean Smith, 51, last week after he turned himself in — and admitted he had unprotected sex with "thousands" of partners with the intention of killing them by infecting them with the virus.

Smith’s mission to sicken his lovers likely stretched to other states including anyone he may have seduced via Yahoo! Personals, as he did with the one of two victims who came forward.
"He’s charming," the alleged victim, who didn’t want to be identified, told 24 Hour News 8. "He’s very charming."
Records from Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, where Smith had been admitted recently because he was "suicidal," indicated he is "sexually aroused by causing pain to females," according to court documents.
the woman, who was diagnosed with HIV in October 2008, said Smith told her there were 3,000 victims including men and women.
"he hits drifters," said the alleged victim. "he hits people who are young. he hits young women, and from what I understand, he hits men too. those are his targets."
Health officials released an alert to residents of Kent County Michigan that "possibly hundreds have been exposed to HIV," and encouraged possible victims to come forward and be tested.
Kent County Health Department spokesperson Lisa LaPlante said this is the first time they have seen someone deliberately trying to spread HIV to so many people.
"We want to make sure that anyone who may have injected drugs with , who may have had sex with him, does come forward and get tested," LaPlante said. "We want to make sure that they’re not spreading the virus to anyone else."
Before his arrest, Smith texted the alleged victim: "Turning myself into the law, my life is over. take care. always love you."
Smith, currently at Kent County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, has been charged with two felony counts of failure to disclose HIV status to a sexual partner, a charge carrying a four-year jail sentence and a $5,000 fine.
Smith’s attorney, Richard E. Zambon, said he is "exploring all options" in his client’s defense, and specified "I am concerned about his mental health."

Fortunately, most of these concepts are actually easy to understand, and once you grasp them, planning a diet can become a very simple matter.
The first thing we need to do in order to plan a proper diet, is to understand the three major nutrient groups: fats, proteins and carbohydrates. then, we need to know how much of each nutrient we need to ingest and how to calculate that. and finally, we can plan our diet using the foods that we like best, based on the percentages we determined for each nutrient. Even though this may sound complicated, it actually becomes really easy once you understand the basic concepts.
Fats: The biggest misconception about weight is to think that all fat is bad. What most people don’t know is that, while some types of fat are bad for you, some fats are an essential part of nutrition. Of course, fat comes in many varieties: saturated fats, unsaturated fats (mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated) and trans-fats. So, how do you know what’s good for you? Here’s the break down:
-Trans-fats are the worst. They are chemically altered fats that have no nutritional value and produce the greatest health risks. Hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated oils are rich on trans-fats. and beware of butter spreads, cooking oils and anything fried (usually trans-fats are produced when you heat oil).
-Saturated fats are the most common in animal and most vegetable products. They are OK in moderation and as a source of extra energy, but you should always keep them to a minimum.
-Unsaturated fats (poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated) are the ideal fats for the proper functioning of the body (yes: the body NEEDS fat to function, and not just for energy). Well, this is what they were talking about (though you can find these fats in a lot of other vegetable products, too, such as seaweed and raw nuts and seeds). EFAs play a major role in a number of bodily functions which range from joint lubrication to major organ processes, specially for the liver and the brain. Among other things, EFAs are said to help lower bad cholesterol and increase good one, and even to accelerate the burning of the bad fats. The catch: the body cannot produce this type of fat on its own, so you MUST get it from foods.
Proteins: The primary function of proteins is to build and maintain muscle tissue, however, they also provide a number of essential amino-acids required for a number of bodily functions. Because of a number of processes in the body, muscle fibers are constantly breaking down, even when you’re not exercising. For this reason, protein consumption on a daily basis is essential, even if you don’t want to gain any muscle mass. Besides meats, protein can be obtained from a number of vegetable sources and dairy products.
Carbohydrates (carbs): Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for the body. whenever your body needs fuel to burn, it will use the available carbohydrates first, and store the fat for the tough times. Expressing happiness over the programme, director general of civil defense Rajendra Prasad was hopeful that such programmes will help the citizens understand how to conduct rescue operations with the available resources.
Saying that Amateur Radio sets proved quite useful during earthquake and Tsunami in 2004, Prasad said. He added, "the Amateur or HAM radio was very useful during the devastating earthquake at Bhuj and also in conducting rescue operations in Andaman and Nicobar islands in 2004.
This device can be used when mobile towers and other communication devices gets destroyed."
He said the civil defence will urge the Centre to issue licenses to run Amateur Radio in Assam soon. Though Amateur Radio is the only mode of communication which works during an emergency, the use of Amateur radio in Assam is yet to gain popularity as Wireless planning and Co-ordination has not issued any license to run Amateur radio in the northeastern states since 1990 due to security reasons.
